On Thursday, June 30th, Ex-Muslims of North America (EXMNA) president and co-founder Muhammad Syed gave a presentation at the 2022 International Religious Freedom Summit in Washington, D.C. The presentation dealt with Nigerian prisoner of conscience Mubarak Bala, who headed the Nigerian Humanist Association and who this year was given a sentence of 24 years in prison for “blasphemy.” Syed spoke about the injustice of the imprisonment of Mubarak Bala, which is an egregious human rights violation and a transgression of the principles of freedom of conscience and expression. In particular, how Bala’s case serves as an especially potent case study of the injustice of apostasy and blasphemy laws worldwide was addressed. The presentation also included a video message from Amina Bala, Bala’s wife, pleading for her husband’s immediate release.
