Washington, D.C. - Ex-Muslims of North America (EXMNA) today announced the launch of the Arabic WikiIslam, an online encyclopedia dedicated to information on Islamic beliefs, customs, and history from a skeptical but objective perspective.

EXMNA took ownership of WikiIslam in 2015 and has since undertaken a comprehensive effort to overhaul the site, with a new emphasis placed on scholarly rigor, objectivity, and writing quality. The site has been restructured and hundreds of articles rewritten, all in accordance with new research and writing guidelines that emphasize thoroughness and accuracy.

“WikiIslam fills a crucial gap in contemporary popular and academic writing about Islam,” said Muhammad Syed, president of EXMNA. “Too many current sources of information about the religion come themselves from religious or otherwise apologetic sources, and WikiIslam has long served as a counterbalance to these perspectives—especially since our recent work to revamp the website. Bringing the wiki’s skeptical, unbiased perspective to an Arabic-speaking audience is as vital as it is timely.”

WikiIslam has grown into an important resource in irreligious circles online, being cited thousands of times monthly on social media sites like Reddit and Twitter. Many of its articles provide original quotes from a wide panoply of Islamic sources on subjects such as jihad, martyrdom, music, sexuality, magic, the life of the Prophet, and capital punishments. 

Although WikiIslam’s English-language edition contains nearly 1,000 articles, EXMNA says that the initial translation efforts have focused on the most significant and salient articles which have been of use to the skeptical community.

“As atheism, secularism, and free thought continue to grow in the Arab world, and as the public conversation on the Arabic internet and in Arabic popular media increasingly turns to the subject of non-religiousness, it is vital that Arab atheists, Muslim apostates, and free thinkers be given the tools they need to argue in favor of science, rationalism, free thought, and naturalism in the face of religious obscurantism, reaction, superstition, and bigotry,” said Syed. “WikiIslam in Arabic will provide Arab free thinkers with the tools they need for this vital conversation.”

أعلنت منظّمة "المسلمون السابقون في أميركا الشمالية" اليوم إطلاق ويكي إسلام بالعربية، وهي موسوعة على الإنترنت مخصصة للمعلومات حول المعتقدات الإسلامية وعاداتها وتاريخها من منظور مشكك لكن موضوعي. 

استحوذت منظمة المسلمون السابقون في أميركا الشمالية على ويكي إسلام في العام 2015 وبذلت منذ ذلك الحين جهداً شاملاً لإصلاح الموقع، مع تركيز جديد على الدقة الأكاديمية والموضوعية وجودة الكتابة. تمت إعادة هيكلة الموقع وإعادة كتابة مئات المقالات، وكل ذلك وفقًا لإرشادات بحث وكتابة جديدة تركّز على الإتقان والدقة.

وقال رئيس المسلمون السابقون في أميركا الشمالية محمد سيد: "يملاُ ويكي إسلام فجوة كبيرة في الكتابة الشعبية والأكاديمية المعاصرة عن الإسلام. فتأتي الكثير من المصادر الحالية للمعلومات حول الدين [الإسلامي] من مراجع دينية أو دفاعية، ولطالما أدّى ويكي إسلام دور الموازن لوجهات النظر تلك - بخاصّة منذ عملنا الأخير على تجديد الموقع. وإنّ تقديم منظور الويكي المشكك وغير المتخيّز للجمهور الناطق باللغة العربية أمرٌ ضروري بقدر ما هو ملائم." 

ونمى ويكي إسلام ليصبح مصدراً مهماً في الدوائر غير الدينية على الإنترنت، فيتمّ الاستشهاد به آلاف المرّات شهرياً على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي مثل ريديت وتويتر. وتقدم الكثير من مقالاته اقتباسات أصلية من مجموعة واسعة من المصادر الإسلامية حول مواضيع مثل الجهاد والاستشهاد والموسيقى والجنس والسحر وحياة النبي وعقوبات الإعدام وغيرها.

وعلى الرغم من أنّ إصدار ويكي إسلام باللغة الإنجليزية يحتوي على ما يقارب 1.000 مقال، إلّا أنّ منظّمة المسلمون السابقون في أميركا الشمالية تقول إنّ جهود الترجمة الأوليّة ركّزت على أهمّ المقالات وأبرزها التي كانت مفيدة للمجتمعات المشككة. 

وقال سيد: "مع استمرار نمو الإلحاد والعلمانية في العالم العربي، ومع تحول المحادثة العامة على الإنترنت العربي وفي وسائل الإعلام العربية بشكل متزايد إلى موضوع عدم التدين، من الضروري أن يُعطى الملحدون العرب والمسلمون المرتدون والمفكرون الأحرار الأدوات التي يحتاجونها للمجادلة لصالح العلم والعقلانية والفكر الحر والطبيعية في مواجهة الظلامية الدينية ورد الفعل والخرافات والتعصب الأعمى. سيوفّر ويكي إسلام بالعربية الأدوات التي يحتاجها المفكرون العرب الأحرار لإقامة هذه المحادثة الحيوية."
