Ready When You Are
This week in our Unbelief Brief, we examine a disturbing London knife attack allegedly claimed by a shadowy Islamist entity with suspected Iranian ties—an incident that underscores a broader and deeply troubling trend: the continued targeting of Jewish civilians far beyond the Middle East. As antisemitic violence linked to extremist Islamist motivations continues to surface across Western democracies, the line between geopolitical conflict and civilian terror grows increasingly dangerous.
Unbelief Brief

Another knife attack in London has been traced back to an entity calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, or HAYI. Translating to “Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Righteous,” the group has claimed responsibility for the recent stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green. The incident follows similar attacks directed against Jews throughout the West this year, including the Bondi Beach shooting in Australia and the Detroit-area Temple Israel attack.
Not much is known about HAYI. Western security and intelligence officials believe it has the markings of an Iranian operation, or at least an Iran-aligned one. The extent to which it is a real group at all is not entirely clear. Counterterrorism experts have found “no known references” to the entity prior to March 9th of this year. This has led some to speculate that its mouthpieces may be claiming responsibility for attacks to which they have no direct connection, as ISIS often did in the 2010s.
But whether this is a real group coordinating attacks on behalf of Iran—or whether it is a true Iranian proxy—doesn’t change the motive of this attack. Police are treating it as a terrorist incident, and the suspect has been arrested. We will likely learn more in the coming days, but it seems clear it was a targeted attempt to murder Jewish people, a goal the Iranian regime openly supports.
It seems the militant Islamist addiction to carrying out acts of indiscriminate civilian terrorism remains strong. While we cannot yet speak of a definitive motive in this case, the suspect had previously been reported to British “counter-extremism” officials in 2020. Additionally, amid the already-pervasive threat of violence against Jews, these kinds of attacks have surged over the past few years. Whatever one’s own views on the conflicts in the Middle East, it should not be difficult to agree that civilians are not legitimate targets. Unfortunately, this is something that Islamists do not, in fact, agree on.
Until next week,
